TDS Engr Solutions is introducing Steel Connections Unified, a video series focused on what is possible when structural steel connection workflows are brought into
AVEVA Unified Engineering 3D.
In this first video, we start with one of the most common connections in structural steel design: the single plate connection, also commonly known as a shear tab connection.
The objective is not to provide a command-by-command modelling tutorial. Instead, the video shows how a steel connection can be treated as part of a structured engineering relationship between two members: the owning beam and the attached beam.
Owning beam and attached beam relationship
In this workflow, the connection is not considered an isolated object.
The owning beam is the main beam that owns or controls the connection. The attached beam is the beam that connects into the owning beam through the plate and bolt arrangement.
This relationship is important because the connection geometry can be influenced by the dimensions and position of both beams.
For example, the beam depth, flange position, web position, and member alignment can affect the connection plate size, plate position, hole arrangement, and other connection parameters.
When the owning beam or attached beam changes in size, the connection parameters can be adjusted accordingly.
